The second edition since Bretherick himself retired from the project first published in 1975. In the middle 1960s, laboratory scientists were being injured from explosions and other events that Bretherick and others had known the danger of for a decade or more. He decided to compile a single-volume reference to the published accounts of reactive chemicals and their hazardous reactions, augmented with unpublished but otherwise documented information. To the 1994 edition are here added some 200 new compounds, bringing the total to about 5,000, and 30 new groups, bringing them to about 650. The chemicals, presented in the 2104-page first volume, are arranged alphabetically by chemical symbol. The 428-page second volume contains entries with general information on the hazardous behavior of some recognizably discrete classes or groups of the compounds detailed in volume one, and other entries on reactive hazard topics, techniques, or incidents that have a common theme or pattern involving compounds of several different groups with no common structural features. In preparing this fourth edition, we have again reworked the entire book at the sentence level to make it as easy as possible for a reader to understand and learn chemistry. Among the many changes and improvements, much art has been redrawn to show molecular views of chemical processes, many new molecular models have been added, and numerous electrostatic potential maps have been included to show the polarity patterns in molecules.
Problems and problem solving have also received a great deal of attention in this 4th edition. The use of visual, non-numerical "Key Concept" problems has been expanded. The number of these problems, which test an understanding of the material rather than the ability to put numbers into a formula, has increased, and Worked Key Concept Examples have been included in each chapter to show how to approach these problems. ...you do not need any advanced knowledge to benefit from Roy's book; it is one for the foreman, the operator and the mechanic as well as the graduate engineer. Buy copies for your control room and workshop as well as one for your office and if you have the first edition it is time to replace by the third edition. This is a brilliant book that seems less like a lesson in science than an entertaining intellectual journey through a fascinating slice of history. Morris was an absolutely gifted writer and a fantastic storyteller. All of this shines through as he takes you from the origins of alchemy to the refinement of the periodic table. Wonderful book!
