European Week Eindhoven 2009

The European Week Eindhoven (EWE) is a biennial event that will take place for the tenth time, from May 25th to May 29th 2009. During this event more than 350 students from all over Europe, as well as 100 Dutch students from the organization, gather to discuss various topics concerning the development of Europe on the basis of a central theme. The theme of the conference of the European Week Eindhoven 2009 will be:

“Faces of Europe: Looking through the eyes of others”

In addition to the lectures and workshops, the participants take part in all kinds of cultural events during the week, such as a trip to The Hague, a cultural festival and Eindhoven’s biggest student party: the Auditorium party!
 
Description of the central theme
Europe has a great diversity of countries and cultures, each with its own  customs, traditions, cultural backgrounds, norms and values. Hence each country has its own “face” and its own way of looking at the rest of Europe and the world. A large number of European countries are members of the European Union, and yet even within this union, it seems that countries promote and draw attention to topics of their own interest. Thus, topics such as the European Constitution, a European President and accession of non-EU countries are still matters for discussion. Furthermore, countries also have their own ideas about the economic, political and cultural position of Europe as a whole and in relation to the rest of the world.

The week will start with a discussion about the identity, cultures and traditions of Europe and its individual member states. Then the integration of all these different parts into one Europe will be considered, looking at the topics through the eyes of different European countries. On the last day of the congress program, we will take a look at the reputation of Europe within the global community.

In addition to lectures by renowned speakers on the above-mentioned topics, a number of forums and workshops will be organized, open to all those attending. Here the participants will have the opportunity to exchange opinions about the themes discussed and gain insight into the different views people can have on Europe.

With this program, we hope to broaden the perspective of the participants and provide them with a new and varied insight into Europe so that they learn to look at, respect and understand topics not only from their own point of view, but also through the eyes of others


Participation
Despite the EWE’s tradition of high-profile, prominent speakers and the rich cultural program, the EWE will be free of charge.
Because of the many subscriptions and limited places, we are forced to make a selection of people we can invite. For this reason you need our invitation to participate in the EWE 2009.
