The Theme

Europe plays an increasingly important role for our continent’s higher education institutions. The European Commission’s policies have an impact on institutional missions and positioning, and their programmes provide an important source of funding. It is therefore essential for universities and colleges in Europe to learn, as early as possible, about new trends on the European agenda. To do just this, i.e. to familiarise higher education institutions with the latest developments in European policy and programmes in education, training and research, is the purpose of ACA’s European Policy Seminars. Since the launch of this series in 2004, the first European Policy Seminar each year provides an overview of recent developments in European higher education policy and programmes. 2009 is no exception to this rule.

 “What’s new in Brussels 2009” will present the latest information on, and analysis of, the Erasmus Mundus II Programme (which should be up and running at the time of the seminar), other EU higher education schemes with non-European countries, as well as the plans for the Bologna Process after 2010 and the European Commission’s ambitions for global cooperation in science and technology. Other issues on the agenda are the French EU Presidency’s plans for a new approach to global higher education rankings, and a case study of global outreach in the form of the Erasmus Mundus Alumni Association.
