The British Embassy, Sofia is offering an internship opportunity for a University student or graduate to join the Embassy’s Political Section from January 2013. This position would require a minimum commitment of three-month position, but which could be extended, by mutual agreement, for a longer period.
The internship will focus on identifying political, cultural and regulatory barriers facing British companies looking to ‘do business’ in Bulgaria. The successful intern will work with the Political Section to identify both risks and opportunities, with the eventual aim of developing an engagement plan for the Embassy to help promote a business-friendly environment in Bulgaria for UK businesses.
MAIN DUTIES:
• Evidence Gathering - To identify and contact a wide range of UK export businesses and relevant Bulgarian importers, with the aim of assisting with conducting guided interviews to identify potential obstacles to UK firms exporting to Bulgaria. This will also involve contacting top UK companies to learn about their strategic plans for Bulgaria and the region, as well as identifying UK firms active in the South Eastern Europe region but not present in Bulgaria.
• Writing strategy report - To work on writing a ‘strategy paper’ on ‘doing business in Bulgaria’ to inform Embassy engagement plan. The report will include: an analysis of bilateral trade statistics, summary of relevant business climate indicators; and an analysis of strategic opportunities and risks for UK firms entering the local market You will be expected to present your final report and recommendations to an expert group within the Embassy.

The successful Intern will need to demonstrate their ability in the following areas:

• “Customer Focus” - Demonstrating a clear understanding of the needs of your “customers” inside and outside the organisation and how that influences your work
• Ability to work with others as part of a team, and to work with other teams in a large organisation
SKILLS REQUIRED
• Ability to analyses and interpret business reports and trade statistics
• Knowledge and understanding of UK (or Western European) business presence in Bulgaria and the region and the possible issues they face doing business here
• Strong writing and communication skills – in particular any experience preparing evidence-based strategy papers aimed at non-expert audiences
• High level of ability with Microsoft Office – especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Fluency in English and Bulgarian, orally and in writing (Knowledge of any other Balkan language would be an advantage)
