We are a group of students from the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve (UCL) in Belgium. We form an organization named AUEL: Association Universitaire Européenne de Louvain. This organization has the objective to act in order to create a “European public space”, like it has been suggested by the European Council. It is also a good way to bring together European citizens around this big project, which is our future, and especially the future of students. Our main project is the European Week; a week during which students from different European universities are invited to debate about the European community’s affairs, as well as to take part to several activities which want to promote the cultural diversity of the European identity.
This year, the European Week will take place from the 19th to the 23rd of March 2007 on the campus of the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve in Belgium (the UCL is located at only 45 minutes by train from Brussels, the capital of Europe). Each of the former editions has brought together more than a hundred of participants from all over Europe; from countries already belonging to the European Union but also countries that want to enter Europe (such as Croatia and Turkey).
We invite you to follow a five-day marathon. The program consists of: a simulation of the European Parliament, debates, conference with deputies, visits of the European Institutions and of Brussels; without forgetting some funny moments like a Welcome Party, a Quiz, a European dinner and an evening in Brussels.
Since it has be created, in 2000, the AUEL has received the support of Xavier RENDERS, Vice-President of the Students Affairs of the UCL, and of Melchior WHATELET, former federal Vice-Prime Minister, President Minister of the Walloon Region and Magistrate at the European Court of Justice. Moreover, our organization has different contacts and works in partnership with the Belgian Permanent Representation at the European Union, the Delegation of the French Community at the European Union, the European Movement, Europe Direct (Info Point Europe), CNAPD, etc.
The participation at the European Week is open to all European students motivated about Europe. However, it is necessary that each participant has an active knowledge of English (easy and clear oral expression) and, if possible, a passive knowledge of French (oral and writing comprehension). The languages of the activities will be either English or French.
The participation costs to this European Week are 35€ per person. Due to sponsoring and subsidies that we could obtain soon, this fee will probably be cheaper. The student will get free accommodation on the campus of Louvain-la-Neuve and will live in a student-room with Belgian students. The participants have to take their sleeping bag.
In order to make a real success out of this European Week, we need the largest participation of students from all over Europe. However, we just want to inform you that the number of places will be limited to 6 - 10 participants per country. That is the reason why you are all kindly invited to fill in the application form (on the next pages) and to send it to us before Sunday the 10th of February 2007 at the following email address:
auel_ucl@yahoo.com. This event is a unique chance to discover how Europe works from inside, to mix with and to call on the European Union agents, all of that in a friendly atmosphere and an open-minded spirit.
